Shared responsibility for overall stability, availability, and security of Windows, Linux, and VMware servers
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Deploy servers for new or existing projects; keep deployed systems up-to-date with OS, hardware and software patches and upgrades
- Demonstrate professionalism in response to customer requests for Windows, Linux, and VMware resources and solutions
- Coordinate with customers to upgrade, retire or consolidate applications and server hardware as appropriate
- Research and/or contact vendors regarding technical problems and solutions
- Troubleshoot servers
- Provide third-level support for the PBS Solution Center (help-desk)
- Document systems deployments and configurations
- Coordinate with Network Administration staff regarding connectivity, electrical and rack-mounting needs for servers in the Data Center
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- A system administrator with at least 5 years experience
- Strong skills/experience in at least one of the following: Linux, Windows, or VMware, and modest skills/experience in the others with an interest in further developing those skills is required.
Linux experience should include: - Experience administering Red Hat LINUX or other RPM-based distributions of LINUX
- Experience with VI and shell scripting or programming in various shells (i.e. BASH, KORN) and/or Perl
- Experience administering BIND DNS, FTP, and NTP required
- Experience with common network protocols (TCP/IP stack), such as DNS, SMTP, FTP, Telnet, SSH etc.
- Experience with Storage management, such as partitioning local disks, LVM, and/or SAN/NAS implementations
Windows experience should include: - Experience building, monitoring, patching, configuring and troubleshooting Windows 2003/2008 servers
- Experience working with HP ProLiant or other supported Server-class hardware, including hardware/firmware upgrades and troubleshooting
- Experience with common network protocols (TCP/IP stack), such as DNS, WINS, SMTP, FTP, Telnet, SSH etc.
- Experience with Storage management, such as partitioning local disks and/or SAN/NAS implementations
- Experience with Cluster Services for Windows Servers (MSCS) and network load balancing (NLB)
- Experience Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA)
- Experience administering IIS, SQL, and Exchange desired
VMware experience should include: - Experience administering VMware ESX Server v 3.5 or vSphere 4.0 desired
- Experience administering Virtual Center desired
General experience should include: - Maintaining systems in a 24x7 environment
- Preparing system specifications
- Installation and configuration
- Performance tuning
- Troubleshooting
- Account maintenance
- Experience managing servers in a Storage Area Network environment desired
- Patching
- Security hardening
- Strong working knowledge of TCP/ IP networking
- Administering servers running on blades
MINIMUM EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related technical degree; or Bachelor’s degree in non related field accepted with adequate training and experience
Training in Windows should include: - Windows 2003/2008 Administration, Active Directory, TCP/IP, Microsoft Clustering, IIS, or SQL desirable
- MCSA or MCSE certification helpful
Training and Certification in Red Hat Linux should include: - Red Hat Advanced Server or Enterprise Server desirable
- RHCT or RHCE certification helpful
Training and Certification in VMware should include: - VMware ESX Server Administration, Virtual Center, VCP or VCAP certification helpful
SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Troubleshooting hardware and software problems
- Visual Basic scripting and command-line administration skills
- Familiar with Microsoft “AdminPak” tools and MMC plug-ins
- User and Group Management using Active Directory and local-security tools in Windows
- Server deployment skills, including cloning and/or automated deployment
- Systems “hardening” and “lockdown procedures
- Auditing and Monitoring of Windows systems and logs
- Storage systems management; backup/restore configurations, and data replication
Linux technical skills: - Troubleshooting hardware and software problems
- Shell or Perl scripting and command-line administration skills
- Logical Volume Management and file system maintenance
- Administering and troubleshooting MySQL and Apache helpful
- Server deployment skills, including cloning and/or automated deployment
- Systems “hardening” and “lockdown procedures
- Auditing and Monitoring of Linux systems and logs
- Storage systems management; backup/restore configurations
- Administering clustered servers using RedHat clustering suite
- Administering and tuning NFS services
- Maintaining DNS, FTP, and HTTP services
VMware technical skills: - Installation and configuration of ESX server
- Administration of High Availability (HA), and distributed resource scheduler (DRS) Administration and use of VMware Virtual Center
- Server performance monitoring and patching
General skills: - Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must
- Strong customer service skills and an ability to work well as a team member
- Familiarity with a wide range of network technologies, solutions and trends, and ability to advocate and justify technical solutions to common business and systems-management problems
- Proficiency in the basic Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
