Objective & Invitation

The Imagen Foundation seeks to recognize and reward positive portrayals of Latinos in all forms of media. Content creators, filmmakers, and students are invited to submit their short films, student films, and web series to the Imagen Awards Short/Student Films & Web Series Competition. This special competition is geared towards showcasing the best of short form content featuring talent from our Latino community or that touches on themes/subject matter relevant to the Latino community.

Eligibility Requirements

Please read the eligibility requirements below carefully to ensure that your film or program qualifies for this competition.

  • All content must have first been released online or participated in a U.S. film festival between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018.
  • Short and student films and web series that have been submitted for consideration previously in the Imagen Awards are not eligible.
  • Content must meet at least one of the following:
    1. Portray Latinos and/or the Latino culture in an authentic and accurate manner
    2. Demonstrate outstanding creative achievement by Latinos
    3. Serve to provide a better understanding of Latinos cultures, communities, or issues
  • All content must be produced and/or distributed in the United States
  • Student filmmakers are eligible to submit content in any of the categories so long as the content meets that category’s qualifications.
  • Each entry must include a link to an online screener. For voting purposes, your link must be publicly viewable.
  • All projects must be submitted in their final format.

Entry Procedures

The Imagen Awards Short/Student Films & Web Series Competition is open to all filmmakers, students, and content creators whose work was originally released, streamed, or participated in a film festival between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018. To be considered in the competition, entrant must submit one full and complete online entry form for each qualifying entry along with an online link where the film or series can be reviewed. One online entry form must be completed per category. The entry fee is $75USD per entry per category and is due upon entry submission. Entry fees are non-refundable.

The call for entries period opens June 15, 2018. The deadline to submit has been extended to July 10, 2018.


Eligible films and programs can be submitted in one of the following categories.

  • Short Film: Short films with a max length of 30 minutes.
  • Student Film: Short film with a max length of 30 minutes.
  • Web Series: Series that is created by or features Latino talent. Each episode can be no longer than 10 minutes. A minimum of 2 episodes must be submitted for consideration.

Finalists & Voting

Submissions will be reviewed by panels of distinguished entertainment industry executives and Latino community leaders to select the Finalists in each category. Finalists will be announced in mid-July.

Winners in each category will be selected through public voting on the Imagen Foundation website, which will start immediately once the finalists are announced. Finalists will be encouraged to engage their social media followers to vote in the competition.

Winners Announcement

Winners of the competition will be announced on or about August 1, 2018 and will be provided with one ticket to attend the 33rd Annual Imagen Awards on Saturday, August 25 at the J.W. Marriott L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles. Please note that transportation to and from Los Angeles and accommodations are not included. Winners will be responsible for their own travel arrangements.
