Ballet Hispánico is seeking an emerging choreographer and emerging filmmaker for the Spring 2021 Instituto Coreográfico. Applications will open on February 1, 2021 at 10:00am EST and will close on March 1, 2021 at 5:00pm EST.

Program Description
Instituto Coreográfico will provide an emerging choreographer a professional and supportive environment in which to explore process, cultural identity, and movement invention through the creation of dance. That support includes 60 hours of studio time working with the Ballet Hispánico Company dancers, an appointed mentor with whom to discuss the art making process, constructive feedback from leaders in the dance field, video footage of the rehearsal process, a work sample sizzle reel, and a stipend of $2000. This opportunity is for choreographers who have set work only on companies with budgets of $1.5M or less and have a demonstrated interest in creating culturally specific work based on their own background and experience.

Choreographer Eligibility

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Identify as Latinx (a,o), Hispanic, Latin American
  • Have fewer than 5-years of professional experience
  • Be open to working with an emerging artist from the other discipline
  • Available May 17th – May 28th, a minimum of 5 hours each day, between 9 am and 6 pm EST

How to Apply

Submit a Choreographer Application Form. The following materials will be required to submit your form:

  • Short Bio (150 words max)
  • Headshot
  • Artistic statement defining artistic focus and long-term artistic goals (500 words max)
  • Project description or choreographic inquiry (500 words max)
  • 5-10 minute work sample. The work sample can be in-studio or fully produced. No more than 10 minutes of video will be reviewed by the panel. Please avoid using short edits that show fewer than 30 seconds of your work in continuity. Videos must be uploaded to Vimeo, YouTube, or Google Drive. For password protected videos, you must provide the password.
  • 1-2 Additional High-Res Images. Images should be action-shots or in-studio shots
  • 2-3 References – preferably from your artistic field

Outcomes

  • Completion of at least five minutes of movement material or excepts to be shared at a work(s)-in-progress showing. This showing will not be costumed. Music rights must be properly obtained by the choreographer.
  • 1-3 meetings with mentor
  • 1 meeting with dance presenters
  • 1-2 invited rehearsals with general audience/donors

Timeline

  • February 1, 2021: Open call for submissions
  • March 1, 2021: Submission deadline
  • March 2021: Internal review consisting of two rounds: In round one, applicants are reviewed by a selected group of dance presenters and advisors. In round two, remaining applicants are reviewed by the Artistic Director and BH artistic staff.
  • April 5, 2021: Notification sent to all applicants
  • May 17 -May 28, 2021: Residency with open rehearsals (open rehearsal dates TBD)
  • June 10, 2021: Work(s)-in-progress showing and discussion

Filmmaker

Program Description

A filmmaker will be paired with the selected choreographer and will be provided with a professional and supportive environment in which to develop their craft. That support includes being mentored by veteran dance filmmaker and producer, Nel Shelby and her team of filmmakers. We are seeking filmmakers who are particularly interested in learning the unique skill of capturing the multi‐dimensions of dance and the dance making process.
